The original settlers, Charles & Elizabeth Simpson came to Kuaotunu in 1890 by boat ,and started farming the area. Kuaotunu is an old gold mining district with a very interesting history. An interesting book ,*This Is Kuaotunu*, written by a member of the Simpson family, some of whom still live here, is  available to purchase. Kuaotunu is north facing with a beautiful safe beach, suitable for swimming any time of the day.Off shore are The Mercury Islands, and in the distance you can see Great Barrier Island.
